Travel’s inconvenient convenience
The travel industry is sinking billions of dollars into technology like online booking tools, check-in kiosks and phone systems that recognize your voice, promising it will make you next trip easier than ever. But is improving your travel experience — or just their bottom line? (Christopher Elliott)
Unsung heroes
The war on terror continues, and yet few remember that the first casualties were flight attendants. In the six years since 9/11, there have been many ceremonies and many remembrances for those who died in that day’s tragic events. Police officers, firefighters and other first responders gather every year with political bigwigs on stages across America. Sadly, flight attendants are almost never included. (Charles Leocha)
Change of plans? Too bad
John Knapp tries to change his airline ticket from Fayetteville, Ark., to Washington, but his airline won’t let him and his travel agency, Orbitz, won’t help him. Now he has to pay for a new ticket. Is he entitled to a refund? And if so, who should pay him back? (Christopher Elliott)
Staying at a foreign hotel? 15 tips
I love traveling to new countries. I like new adventures and delight in surprises, so I’m always eager to stay in unusual places. My excitement turns to dismay, however, when I arrive at my hotel only to find armed guards out front, or a six-story room and no elevator, or a room the size of a closet that’s been taken over by a dog-sized water bug. Sure, getting the best out of a foreign hotel can be tricky, but I have a few tips to make things a little easier. (Amy Bradley-Hole)
My flight as a pack mule
A trip to see the grandparents in England. At first it didn’t seem like that big a deal, but soon reality hit: the summer crowds, the long lines at the airport, some extreme weather — and a little boy fast approaching 2 years of age. Suddenly the flight to England seemed like a major undertaking. (James

Lifestyles of the rich and famous: seaside edition
Who says you can’t travel in luxury style on a mass-market cruise ship? In recent years, cruise lines have courted the wealthy with some extravagant – and pricey – offerings designed to register high on the “Wow!” meter. Want to sip from a bottle of 1959 Château Lafite-Rothschild? How about a private party on a private island, or a massage in your own cabana, or maybe a personal portside shopper? No problem. Check out these offerings for folks with money to burn. (Anita
