Sounds very nice, but I can’t help but think that not too far from that hotel were some of the worst torturers around.

There’s a handful of hotels around around the world that I’ve read about and longed to stay in. Some have been a disappointment – the Savoy in London the Georges V in Paris – and others have delighted beyond words. The American Colony in Jerusalem, Victoria Jungfrau in Interlaken and Reid’s in Funchal come to mind as places that delivered against the fantasy of the reviews and travellers’ tales. Ambience, service, choice, situation …they all come to bear and sometimes it all comes together.

Hanoi’s Metropole has been on that wish list for a good long time. My one and only visit to the city had me staying in a private home and eating from street vendors pretty much all the time – so the wish remains unfulfilled. And now after reading your review I think well…gotta go now. Gotta see it and feel what everyone raves about. I get the feel from your review that I’m not going to be disappointed. Seems they managed to keep the ambience and the style. I’m jealous and it just moved up my ‘must go’ list! Thanks.
