Baby bald eagle cam, in the nest, real time

by Lynn Rosen on May 15, 2009

British Columbia, Canada, has long been in the forefront of preservation of bald eagles. Right now (April/May/June 2009) an amazing webcam is capturing the unfolding progress of baby eaglets as they grow are nurtured and raised.

Enjoy the exceptional show. Remember the nest is in the Pacific time zone.

The nest is in an old Garry oak tree in Sidney, BC – a suburb of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, situated on the South end of Vancouver Island. The area is near the Swartz Bay ferry terminal on the Saanich Peninsula. In nest season 2006, the eagles raised 2 eaglets. In season 2007 they successfully raised one. Here we are in 2009!

Click through to the Hancock Wildlife Channel to see images of the bald eaglets as they have their first feedings and interact with their parents.

This is one of the best postings ever!
I have been watching these birds for hours.

  • Terry Hoover

Truly an inspiration from God above

  • Evans Donnell

Really beautiful! Thanks for sending me the link, Lynn.

I’m never going to get any work done.

  • Jamie

The two larger ones don’t seem to be very fond of the smaller one; does anyone know why this is?

  • http://Babybaldeaglecam,inthenest,realtime Bernice

Where are our birds? Can’t get them right now. We have enjoyed this livef cam feed so much. To be able to see God’s beautiful creatures develop right in front of our eyes is awesome. Thank you so much for doing this and thank the Lord God for His wonderful creation.

  • Zhar

Jamie, all animals will outcast any ill or runt litter mates, it’s a part of nature. Runts are smaller because they aren’t as healthy & strong, and often have defects. The litter mates seem to know that something is different/wrong, and as far as survival goes, it’s wired into them to be this way.

  • http://highonadventure.com Lynn Rosen

They got HUGE! It’s those bunnies and possum for lunch.

  • Leta Dunlap

Little Bobble doesn’t seem strong or healthy – I worry it’s just a matter of time until he’s kicked from the nest or dies there. But big Bobble – OMG! He’s huge!

  • Carol B

Does anyone know which other species of birds are singing constantly? I’ve enjoyed the sounds of the woods immensely (and my cat took notice at first as well) while I’ve watched the eaglets mature.

I’ve hoped against hope that little guy will somehow get enough to eat but that might exhaust the parents, providing that much food for all three of them!

  • http://n/a Jane S.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all 3 make it to adulthood this year ? The little guy looks a lot stronger ( and bigger ) today.

  • gerry gauvin

Sure interesting to see this but I get upset with the two big ones.
The mother must have a reason for ignoring the small one most of the time.
I wonder if the eagles find all the food themselves or if anyone is helping by supplying meat especially.
Thanks for allowing us to see this live.
I’ve never seen anything like this before.

  • http://realtime gerry gauvin

    what moderation?

  • http://realtime gerry gauvin

    Thanks for a good show

  • Lauren

Looks like the little guy is gaining strength, but he’s got a ways to go. He finally gets to eat when the rest are done. I’m rooting for him!!

  • Leta Dunlap

oops – somebody pooped on the camera lens! Hopefully, next rainstorm will clear it up a bit.

  • Leta Dunlap

Does anybody know what those white things are in the background – looks like they’re floating on the water? Just curious…
    Thanks for the great show!

  • http://realtime gerry gauvin

Hey man,I wish someone with a long handled squeegee would clean that camera lens.
    We’re missing a lot.
I think it’s a lot of bad manners from the newborns even though as a rule they aim pretty straight.
Don’t know how they do it but regardless I’m enjoying the show.
At dinner time when I slice my meat, I feel that I should share it with the small one.
Have I been watching this great show for too long???

Where’s the little dude? Is he all gone?

  • Dee

I’m worried about the little dude. His feathers aren’t growing as well, and he is less active than the big guys. The natural process is hard sometimes.

  • Fowl Friend

The ratings seem to be “dropping”. Can we vote one of these guys out of the nest?

  • http://realtime gerry gauvin

Is there any way that we can find out how they made out when they finally fly out of the nest.
I think the big ones are getting pretty brave and they will either fall out or fly out very soon.
I would really like to see videos of what happens when they leave the nest.

  • Eagle Lover

Have the eaglets started to fly yet? When they do, someone please note it here. It has been great fun watching them grow and develop!

  • gerry gauvin

The big one is almost ready to go. I watch them all the time and will record the time of the initial flight hopefully.
Such a nice event to be part of.

  • http://http/realtime.com gerry gauvin

Any time now. I’ve been watching religiously and hopefully I’ll be part of the initial flight.
Hope my daughter Denise is watching.

  • gerry Gauvin

Any time now….I hope I’m around to see the initial flight

  • Dee

I’ve been off line for a week. What’s happening? Do the parents still feed them? I watched for a really long time, and no one delivered any groceries. Once they fly, do they ever come back to the nest? I’d love to get more info from the eagle experts among our viewers.

  • Eagle Watcher

It looks like a baby is hiding under the nest

  • Eagle Watcher

Anyone know what kind of birds are in the nest

  • http://www.tripso.com/author/leocha Charlie Leocha

If you mean the big black birds walking around the nest, they are the grown-up version of the tiny gray fluffy eaglets that were there two months ago. I figure with all the wing flapping going on, these birds are only a couple of weeks away from flying. Wow! Will that be neat.

  • gerry

what a show they’re putting on for us…each one trying to outspread their wings.
Fantastic to see that live as it happens.
The small one ate well yesterday so he has more energy and tries to strut his stuff along with the two big ones. (4.40 P.M. e.d.s.t.)

  • http://highonadventure.com Lynn Rosen

One of them just FLEW across the nest!

  • Gerry

Do you folks realize that these eagles haven’t had a drink of water since birth.
How do they survive with no liquid in the diet is beyond me.
The fish is moist enough but it’s not like a drink in the lake.
    Just thought I’d mention that

  • http://Babybaldeaglecam,inthenest,realtime Bernice

What a wonder to watch the growth of these eagles live before our eyes. What a glorious sight. Praise the Lord God Almighty. I am praying that all three of them will survive to maturity. We enjoy all the comments from others that are watching.

  • Lauren

I agree with you Bernice! Amen!
Speaking of no water to drink, I have noticed it has not rained during this time, at least not during the daylight hours.

  • gerry

Did I miss something? Seems that the smallest one has hurt his leg somehow. Doesn’t look good. And that tree shaking like that…I wonder if someone is urging them to fly out of the nest by shaking the tree at ground level.

  • http://n/a Jane S.

I only see 2 this morning. Did one fly out yesterday (June 13)?

  • http://www.tripso.com/author/leocha Charlie Leocha

I think the biggest one is off to the left side of the screen behind the tree trunk. I can see his wing tips as he practices flapping.

  • Lauren

I think you’re right…..I witnessed the same thing. It looks like mom was watching it too!

The little guy is stubborn and I think he’s going to die of starvation.
He tries to act so independent and he can’t afford to.
Come on folks give us your thoughts…

  • leta

8:53pm CDT (6:53 pacific), and one of the chicks is wreaking havoc on the camera! LOL. Pecking and investigating all over and around it, pecking at the lens, trying to pull the thing loose! What a close-up view of this bird’s beak and eyes! Hope you guys have that camera mounted solid.

  • http://tripso.com Susan

What happened to the third baby? Did I miss it flying away, or did it … get thrown out of the nest or something. This morning the two birds were working together to move a stick away from their food. Amazing.

  • http://tripso.com Susan

Oh there he is! Eating like crazy and flapping those wings. When oh when will they fly?

  • http://realtime gerry

Are you the Susan that I know…from northern Ontario close to Echo Bay?

Quite an experience those eagles aren’t they?

  • http://n/a Jane S.

Oh, no ! Why is the site not available this morning? When will it be back up?

  • http://realtime gerry

I don’t think we’ll see it anymore…Must be some reason. I wish they would tell us what’s happening after watching this for a few months…I’m starting to eat like an eagle…not sharing etc….just kidding..

  • http://realtime gerry

I’ll never, ever, ever watch an event like this again. They cut off the site with no explanation what so ever. If they can write that it’s not available why not tell us why.

I went to the site and it’s the same thing.
I wish the eagles well but we’ll never know will we??
This is my last posting as I’m deleting the site from my computer.
    What a downer.
