No kidding Dave, thanks for your comments. Hit a new "low" today - a British Airways fare roundtrip between London and San Francisco for USD 243.00 - total with the mandatory extras. 829.00!

The government needs to step in for truth in advertising. Stuff like baggage fees that people can avoid should be legal. But this so-called "fuel surcharge" is simply bait and switch. As you say, it's never going away, no matter the fuel price. It is simply a way to lie about what the fare really is.

Why don't we start boycotting one airline at a time? If no one flew American for a week, think what effect that would have. (Not picking on American, just first in alpahbetic order). One week and they would have to start making adjustments to their fees, terms and conditions. If they won't, then there would be another week of boycott not far down the road. If they lose 2% of their top line revenue and are threatened to lose another 2% a month later, I think they, and the others, would quickly fall in line by simplifying their fares, including all the appropriate fees in the base price and let us make an informed decision based on total cost, not just the upfront base fare. We want the airlines to make a profit, or they won't be around to fly us when we need to fly. We simply want equitable treatment, complete information and open communication. That really shouldn't be that hard to get.
