… the tough go shopping.
Shhhh, don’t tell too many people, but here’s a secret that folks living in or near seasonal communities know.
When the snowbirds begin heading south, and shops start shuttering for the season, the deals are delicious. Now, add the current economic woes, and merchants at some shops are practically paying shoppers to take merchandise off their hands.
Travelers who can sneak in a visit to such communities can not only nail post-Columbus Day rates (and perhaps a late-season leaf peep), but also get the bulk of their holiday shopping done at significant savings.
This is especially true of chi-chi boutiques, which would never consider carrying over goods from one season to the next. Such stores slash prices, often reducing them by 60 to 80 percent.
And here’s another tip: The tonier communities often have a local thrift shop or consignment store, where even better bargains on gently worn or perhaps never-worn garments and accessories are sold. When I complimented a friend on her smashing outfit, she whispered that she’d paid a mere $5 for it at a thrift shop.

We found similar bargains when we sailed on the last cruise of the season to Canada and New England last October. Lots of clothing was marked down to $5, and there were tons of tschokes to be had for 50% off or more!
