At 80, OAG eyes rebirth as ‘entirely new company’

The Official Airline Guide turns 80 this year. Not content to rest on its laurels, parent company United Business Media Ltd. vows to “reinvigorate the company.”

[New CEO Peter] Von Moltke wants to restore its mission. “Our fundamental philosophy is to provide pure information, rather than systems,” he said. The goal is to be the undisputed global leader in providing aviation information, data and analytics to anyone who needs it. Von Moltke envisions it as strictly B2B.

No-frills A380 to fly 840 passengers

Air Austral plans to fly 840 passengers aboard a budget version of the A380. It will be furnished with an all-economy seating.

The A380 entered service in 2007 and is designed to seat 525 people in ordinary three-class seating or 853 people when its two floors of cabins are filled with economy seats — giving it 8 times more capacity than Airbus’s smallest model, the A318.

AirTran puts ads on seatbacks — what would you watch?

Looking to increase revenue, AirTran will start putting ads on seatbacks in all of its jets.

The first ad will be from an environmental news service called Mother Nature Network that is trying to spark attention by offering the chance to win a seven-night Royal Caribbean cruise. AirTran said it will ensure that the ads are all “consistent with the airline’s family-friendly atmosphere.’’
