NTSB studies jetliner, records after rupture

The National Transportation Safety Board will take a piece of the fuselage near the hole of the Southwest Boeing 737-300 that made an emergency landing Monday night.

Peter Knudson, an NTSB spokesman, said the hole was 17 inches by 14 inches. He said the agency plans to cut a two-inch margin around the hole and transport the section to its Washington laboratory. Metal experts at the agency will examine it today, he said.

United/Continental link may have little fare impact

Analysts say that the United/Continental alliance may be good for both but, because of weak travel demand, it will unlikely affect fares.

The pair likely will see financial benefits in the form of cost cuts after the completion of the new link. But in order for higher fares to take hold, the entire industry must reign in the number of seats for sale.

“They’ll just cut capacity to the point where they can generate some pricing power,” said airline consultant Robert Mann. “I don’t think we’ve seen all the capacity cuts on the international yet. I think you’ll start to see them coming in very, very sharply across the winter.”

DealBase.com – It’s like having a travel agent you don’t have to talk to

If you’re looking for a site that can alert you for deals that you customize, go no further than DealBase.com.

Gadling is feeling that it’s the “easiest way to search for travel you can afford ever.”

Basically, you go to DealBase.com and tell them what you want. Four or more star hotels in Vegas for under $300? Any hotel in New York for under $100? Whatever you’re looking for, you can customize your preferences into their system. Then, not only will they search immediately for deals for you or trips that match your criteria — they’ll e-mail you a “Deal Alert” if when they find another one!
