Safety board pins NY crash on pilot errors, questions regional airline safety standards

A federal safety panel says pilot errors were the probable cause of the regional aircraft crash in Buffalo, but there were other factors beyond a single event.

The head of the National Transportation Safety Board, Deborah Hersman, said the accident casts doubt on whether regional airlines are held to the same level of safety as are major airlines, and she promised the board will pursue the issue. She also criticized the Federal Aviation Administration for taking too long to address safety problems raised by the crash, saying the same issues have turned up before.

American’s managers may fill in if flight attendants strike

If the flight attendants strike, American Airlines told the FAA it will train managers to replace them.

“We are committed to the mediation process, and our top objective remains reaching an agreement with the APFA [Association of Professional Flight Attendants] on a contract for our flight attendants,” American spokeswoman Missy Latham said.

“We are also focused on the needs of our operation and will be proactive and responsible in working to coordinate an approved contingency training program, should it be necessary.”

Canadian company cancels Olympic charter of NCL ship

Around 1600 people who booked a cruise on the Norwegian Star will have to find other accommodations now that the charter company cancelled four days before the cruise.

Edmonton, Alb.-based Newwest Special Projects Limited Partnership cited poor sales as the reason for the cancellation of the 28-day charter. The Norwegian Star was scheduled to be in Vancouver throughout the Winter Olympics.

The cancellation included a four-day sailing from Los Angeles to Vancouver on Feb. 6 and a four-day cruise from Vancouver to Los Angeles on March 2.
