Industry hoping next FAA bill has smoother ride through Congress
With the measure that funds the FAA set to expire on January 31, the aviation industry is hoping that lawmakers will act quickly to prevent another shutdown.
Airline companies are bracing for another bumpy ride this month, but are optimistic that lawmakers can agree to at least a short-term extension to keep the FAA up and running.
“The odds are slim they’ll reach a deal [on a long-term bill] in a week, but it’s also unlikely they’ll let it lapse,” an industry source told The Hill.

Air controller error blamed in near-miss
An air traffic controller error was blamed for the near-miss between an Embraer commuter jet and a Cessna at Gulfport-Biloxi airport last year.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the ExpressJet flight with 53 people aboard and a single-engine Cessna 172 came within 300 feet of each other over the Gulfport-Biloxi airport last June 19.
Both took off nearly simultaneously from intersecting runways after receiving clearance to do so from the airport tower staffed by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) controllers, the NTSB said.
