Boeing selects South Carolina for second production line for much-delayed 787 jetliner
Boeing announced that it has selected South Carolina to open a second assembly line for the 787 Dreamliner.
The Chicago-based airplane maker said Wednesday it chose the site in North Charleston over Everett, Wash., because it best suited plans to boost production of the highly anticipated jet, designed to carry up to 250 passengers.
The decision ended an interstate competition for the huge factory, with South Carolina prevailing over the state where Boeing has built airplanes for decades. It hands South Carolina production of a plane crucial to Boeing’s future but one plagued by problems stemming partly from the company’s reliance on suppliers spanning the globe.
American to close Kansas City, other MRO bases next year
American Airlines will close its Kansas City maintenance base next September as part of its downsizing effort. It will also result in a loss of 700 management and union jobs.
According to a letter to employees from Senior VP-Maintenance & Engineering Carmine Romano provided to ATWOnline, AA plans to shutter the former TWA facility at MCI, because of “reduced flying and a fleet that has shrunk from a high of more than 900 planes to approximately 600 today.” Its San Francisco maintenance base will be reduced to Class II status while current Class II stations at Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul and San Jose, Calif., will close. St. Louis operations “will be downsized to adjust to the reduced flight schedule,” Romano wrote.
