Binion’s to Close Vegas Hotel

Citing a downturn in hotel bookings, Binion’s in downton Las Vegas will be closing the hotel, original coffee shop, and the keno room. It will leave the casino open.

December 14, 2009, is the date set for the closures, which will result in about 100 workers being laid off.

[Current owner] MTR [Gaming] stresses that should the economy warrant it, they may consider re-opening the hotel at a later date, but at this time, there has been no decision made as to the length of the closures.

Boeing urges airlines to conduct 777 retrofit

Boeing is urging airlines to retrofit their 777s “in light of a series of incidents of overheating and chronic structural damage to some engine parts.”

Boeing issued the service bulletin on November 25, instructing airlines to install a new thermal protection system that will prevent thermal deterioration of the inner wall of the thrust reverser. A thrust reverser is a device attached to the engine that helps jets slow down after landing.

Nightmare in the skies: two planes just miss collision

On November 23, two commuter planes nearly collided while on approach to Denver International Airport.

Controllers gave the Frontier pilots an incorrect heading — forcing them to make a U-turn, the source told KMGH. That put the jet right in the path of the United Express plane — which was just 200 feet above it and only a little more than a mile-and-a-half away, closing quickly, just seconds apart.
