JAL cuts debt relief request, banks reject

Despite a government-appointed task force cutting its debt relief request for Japan Airlines to JPY250 billion ($2.8 billion) from JPY300 billion, creditors still rejected the plan.

The latest plan was rejected because creditors feel the JPY250 billion in debt waivers and debt-for-equity swaps still asks them to carry too large a burden, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions are not public.

In preparation for the takeover of its rival, Delta Air Lines is changing nearly every Northwest Airlines flight number this week.

Changes go into effect Saturday for international flights and Nov. 1 for domestic flights.
