BA in talks with JAL to stay in Oneworld

British Airways wants JAL to remain part of Oneworld Alliance.

Two sources said earlier on Friday that BA and Oneworld partners American Airlines and Qantas could offer Japan (JAL) fresh capital and expanded business ties to fight off similar plans from Delta.

Earn elite status on US Airways for 7,500 miles

In a bid to keep a frequent flier’s business, airlines are offering incentives for passsengers to earn elite status easier. Such is the case with US Airways.

The Arizona based carrier just announced massive reductions in earnings tiers, now requiring only 7,500 flown miles to reach low level elite status. That’s only 30% of what you would normally have to fly. Their top tier of status, Chairman Elite, can be reached with only 30k miles.

Cruise association sues Alaska over $50 passenger tax

The Alaskan Cruise Association (ACA) has sued the Alaska Department of Revenue, seeking the repeal of a head tax on cruise passengers.

The ACA claims that the tax makes visitors pay for Alaska projects that are not related to cruise ship travel.

The ACA said it seeks relief from the head tax portion of Ballot Measure No. 2, also known as the Cruise Ship Initiative, which was voted into law in 2007 by Alaska citizens.

Alaska levies a $50 tax ($46 in head taxes and a $4 fee to finance an ocean ranger program) on each cruise passenger.
