Need status on American Airlines? January is your month!
If you’re short a couple thousand miles to earn status on American, then January is your month.
Usually, passengers need to fly at least 25,000 miles to reach gold status on the airline, but a double miles promotion (until the end of January) has reduced that to only 12,500. In addition to that, residents of Illinois, Texas and California can earn an additional round of double miles for flying select routes through the end of March, effectively earning some passengers triple miles.
US weighs retaliation over EU emissions law
Starting January 1, the European Union required airlines to pay for carbon emissions on flights to and from Europe. The US is weighing options to retaliate.
Several experts said one option the United States could pursue would involve charging European airlines to maintain US access to pressure EU policymakers. This strategy was used by the United States in a recently concluded dispute with Argentina over landing fees.
American, US Air add surcharges for ETS
American Airlines and US Airways matched other airlines in adding a $3 surcharge to offset the fee they have to pay for carbon emissions.
Representatives of the two US airlines confirmed on Friday that both have matched a USD$3 surcharge each way unveiled by Delta Air Lines on fares purchased in the United States for flights between the US and Europe.
