What to do when hurt, or ill, abroad

Getting seriously hurt or ill while out of the country can cause problems that may be just as serious as your health, such as inadequate care or lack of coverage by insurance companies. CNN has some tips for getting the care you need with fewer hassles. When going overseas, keep in mind that not all countries have the same Western-level of medical care so do your homework. Dr. David Goldberg, who specializes in travel health, told CNN: “Hospital Web sites can provide insight into their quality. If you go to the Web site and you see that the hospital has open heart surgery, there’s a coronary unit, has an ICU, a modern emergency room … it’s not an absolute guarantee, but it tells you you’re going to be getting Western-style medicine if you go there.” The article also recommended getting travel insurance so you are covered in case of a medical emergency.
