As predicted the day before yesterday, United Airlines has increased its baggage fees to $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second. This brings them in line with Delta Air Lines and Continental who increased their baggage charges earlier this month. USAirways added to their fees last month.
The only holdout among the legacy carriers is American Airlines, who is expected to announce their increase imminently. American was actually the leader in the original baggage fee frenzy.
Note: The United timing is a bit different than the others. The fees apply to passengers who purchase their tickets on or after January 14 for travel on or after January 21.
For bags checked online it is now USD$23 for a first bag and USD$32 for a second.
This is a 25 percent increase for the first checked bag.
Southwest Airlines still does not charge for baggage and JetBlue does not charge for the first checked bag.
