It doesn't have to be all you CAN eat. It can be looked at as all you CARE to eat.

One other thing to consider - I'm betting that these "buffet day pass" deals are popular with groups or families traveling together. The no-hassle factor comes in to play, since 1) you're more likely to be able to sit a large group together at a buffet, and 2) the inevitable hour-long argument about where to eat gets preempted. Even if you're not going to eat enough to make it economically worthwhile, cutting out the hassle might be worth it. In general, I think the buffet pass in Vegas is a great idea, since you can dart in and out quickly whenever you need to, and it takes the worry of "what do we do for food" if you're trying to rush between shows. Personally, though, I'd prefer either a fixed dollar food & beverage credit, or a fixed percentage discount on all meals purchased at the hotel, as you suggest. That way, I don't feel compelled to overeat (or drink).

Regarding the "all-day" discount idea for pools or spas, that would be great, except it would defeat the purpose of the evil "resort fees" that hotels love to charge for those kinds of services, so I don't think you'll see that any time soon.

I would love to get some sort of spa discount in Vegas or on a cruise! I think it would encourage more people to try something in the spa that they might not normally want or is costly.
As for food…we just went to Vegas and had a 20% off coupon in our room for Morels Steakhouse (in the Palazzo) so we tried it! Not inexpensive even with the 20% but still great!

This is a good thing.

People like to eat, especially while on a vacation.
It's up to you how much you actually consume.
How many people actually think "I can't wait to get to the casino and go work out"?
Hopefully these programs will expand, as they can be a great value, increase loyalty, and are OPTIONAL.
