Travel agents plead guilty and face serious jail time

by Chris Jernigan on May 7, 2008

The AP reports that two travel agents from San Jose, California have been convicted after pleading guilty on 13 charges of defrauding their customers out of more than $1 million.

Joseph Maloof and Ron Hansen booked religious pilgrimage tours for elderly travelers and educational groups. Prosecutors say that they would cancel planned trips mere days before departure and then not refund the customers’ payments.

Apparently, Hansen had prior convictions and so, faces up to 28 years in prison. Maloof faces up to 14 years.

Both defendants are scheduled to be sentenced in September.
