I think you need to check your economic development and lobbying facts. First, Delta is one of the three largest private sector, for-profit employers in SLC with over 3,000 full timers. That opens lots of doors in DC with Utah politicians. Also, Delta is the second/third largest carrier in Milwaukee and services seven cities nonstop, while AA serves two when STL is dropped in Nov. MSP, the Delta hub, is around 20 miles from the Wisconsin state line, where employees live and residents use the MSP airport. All these facts make Delta a far more important player in Wisconsin and Utah than AA/BA/Iberia.
From my over 20 years in both economic development and lobbying DC I can tell you these senators are representing economic forces in their states, not the American consumer.

I think you need to check your geography. DL is based in Atlanta GA, and NW is based in Minneapolis, MN. True Salt Lake City is a hub for Delta but it is not the company headquarters. Wisconsin though, has very little to do with Northwest airlines.

Is it just a coincidence that a major air carrier for Wisconsin (Kohl) and Utah (Hatch) is Delta/Northwest, competitor to American? Where were these guys when the Delta-Northwest merger created the world's largest airline? Delta now touts the fact it is the largest. Is that not what anti-trust is all about?
I seem to think these guys have more on their mind than protecting the public from a monopoly situation.
