If you feel the temptation of a credit card is too great, consider a charge card like the American Express green, gold or platinum charge chards, or Diners Club or Carte Blanche. These charge cards normally require you to pay the entire balance by the due date. The other advantage is that they have no preset spending limit, which means that if the hotel or car rental company do that extra authorization, you shouldn't run up against a limit. If you prefer you can use the charge card when you rent the car or check into the hotel, but pay the final bill with a debit card or cash.

You can do many things without a credit card but there are some things where it is way easier, and renting a car is one of them.

I agree, don't get rid of all of them. If you really don't want to run up the bill and have it feel like you're paying cash, pay your credit card off every day. You won't get a big balance that way.
