These charge cards normally require you to pay the entire balance by the due date. The other advantage is that they have no preset spending limit, which means that if the hotel or car rental company do that extra authorization, you shouldn't run up against a limit. If you prefer you can use the charge card when you rent the car or check into the hotel, but pay the final bill with a debit card or cash. I agree, don't get rid of all of them. If you really don't want to run up the bill and have it feel like you're paying cash, pay your credit card off every day. You won't get a big balance that way.
