More travel is amazing… why isn’t anyone happy?

by Charlie Leocha on March 2, 2009

I’m always amazed at how ideas seem to find critical mass. Last week Jason Barger wrote a column with a similar title and then one of our contributors, Karen Cummings, forwarded me this very entertaining and oh-so-true video from The Late Show with Conan O’Brien.

Unfortunately, I can’t find a way to embed the video in this post so click above or click right here to see the video. It is worth the four minutes. It might make travelers take another look at travel.

So true. I love this fellow’s attitude. We do take so much for granted.

I was in Hawai’i last week with my wife, and as we were in line at the gate in airport awaiting boarding, a woman behind us was complaining about having to wait. She kept saying how horrible it was to fly and how she hated the wasted time. I looked at her, shook my head, and said, “Oh, honey. You think it’s a hassle to fly back to the mainland? Do you know how long it takes to SAIL HERE!?”

The folks around us laughed, and she had the class and decency to smile.

This was a great bit. I force myself to think of the old days when my computer slows down.

I still like to fly and find it an adventure. But then, I don’t fly for business, and, unless it’s for that rare emergency, I’m not in any hurry. I arrive early and get entertained by the show around me. I’m not so sure if I’ll have the same attitude if all the impatient and wired people of the world will be allowed to use cell phones in the air. Right now, I think how lucky I am to be able to see my grandchildren on the other side of the country in just a few hours.

I agree completely. We are not only living in an age with technological wonders that our ancestors would term ‘magic’, but we are living in a country where we have the wealth and leisure time to enjoy such wonders. Even today, there are people who have never seen a computer, a cell phone, an airplane. There are many folks, even in this country, who toil outside all day long with no time to watch television or read this article.

We are, as he says, living in an amazing age, and take it completely for granted.
