Little splurges to improve your vacation — and the economy

by Janice Hough on March 2, 2009

In a tough economy, it may be harder to justify spending money while on vacation, whether it’s a question of being frugal, or feeling that it’s somehow unseemly these days.

On the other hand, if everyone stops spending, the economy gets worse. And sometimes those little extras really add memorable moments to a trip.

Here are a few random tips for travel splurges in a recession:

Instead of buying expensive drinks in a hotel bar, buy a nice bottle of wine and drink it in the room. If the hotel grounds are attractive, you can take drinks outside. (Though it’s best to be discreet so as not to run afoul of local liquor laws and/or hotel policies.)

For women, that vacation manicure or pedicure can be a great treat, and it will likely cost less than half at a local salon compared to a hotel. Plus the money is likely to go directly into the local economy. (Men can get manicures too, or an equivalent might be a shave at an old-fashioned barber shop.)

Another low-cost treat that you might never do at home is a shoe shine. And a good one will make you feel like you bought a new pair of shoes.

Regional farmers markets can be especially fun when traveling, and again, you know the money is going directly into the local economy.

If clothes-shopping is a passion on vacation, consider local resale shops. Many benefit charities, and others that don’t can have beautiful clothes at a fraction of retail. (And for-profit shops especially tend to be very picky about the condition of their merchandise.) A few minutes Googling will turn up options in most cities.

An extra dollar or two to a shuttle driver, maid, waiter, etc., won’t make much of an overall dent in your budget, but it’s good karma. And overtipping will likely go to someone who can really use, and spend, the money.

These are just a few ideas, other suggestions encouraged. A little creativity goes a long way. Plus when remembering vacation stories, that unexpected deal can be a real highlight.
