Is President-elect Obama building the economy already -– just by virtue of his inauguration? It seems so.
Since I’m from Florida, I figured I’d better have long underwear for standing outside at the inauguration next week. (I’ll wear LOTS of layers.) So I went to my nearby outdoors outfitter, Travel Country Outdoors and asked about the various types. The saleswoman (Wow! Sales help? Don’t see that much any more) took me over to their extensive selection, and picked out a particular type. “This is the style I bought — I’m going to the inauguration next week,” she said. So I bought a similar style.
The store was hopping. It looked like three days before Christmas. And since I haven’t seen a retail store even feel “busy” in the past few months — blame the economy — I mentioned at the cash register (after waiting in line), “Most stores are empty these days; how come you guys are so busy?”
“Oh,” the cashier replied, “it’s the inauguration. Everybody’s coming in here to buy warm clothes. Lots of people in Florida don’t have coats and long underwear.”
Yup. Chalk up a tiny pre-inauguration economic blip to the new president.
