My discomfort comes from being wedged in between two other passengers. The center-of-center seats in a 2-5-2 configuration isn't so bad if seats 2 and 4 are unoccupied. The problem is the limited personal space (especially after the person in front of you puts their seat back). It's hard not to disturb your neighbor if you shift your weight, re-position your arms on the armrests, cross your legs, etc (and visa versa). I don’t necessarily object to a middle seat. For that matter, is there anything about air travel that <i>isn't</i> "reviled by the traveling public"?
