Hotels help travelers cope with jet lag

by Jon Surmacz on March 5, 2008

Air travel, combined with basic sleep deprivation, can be a nightmare for many travelers. Thankfully, some hotel chains have recognized the problem and are coming to the aid of travelers suffering from jet lag. TODAYshow.com contributor Peter Greenberg, who claims he doesn’t get jet lag, investigates a Westin “concept room” developed in partnership with Phillips. Greenberg reports, “The concept room is equipped with Philips’ ActiViva lamps — revolutionary new blue-light lamps that provide high-quality lighting and directly affect the way people feel by supposedly making them feel more alert, awake and energized. In Philips field tests, participants indicated an increase in their own performance by 10% or more after using these lamps.” Do they really work? Anecdotally… nothing has been scientifically tested yet. As for Mr. “No Jet Lag” Greenberg, he offers his prescription for keeping your internal clock on time: don’t eat airplane food, don’t drink booze on the flight and stay up until at least 11 p.m. local time on your first night.
