From our forums: What does an airline owe you for a delay?

by Christopher Elliott on May 2, 2008

Your flight’s delayed. What does your airline owe you? That’s what one traveler is wondering on the blazing hot TalkingTravelers forum (which you really ought to join now). “I got an email from American Airlines today apologizing for the delay and crediting my account 3000 miles,” the traveler said. “Is this worth pursing more or should I just sit fat and happy that the flight wasn’t cancelled and AA seems to be proactively responding to the delay?”

Find out what everyone else thinks and sound off with your own opinion on TalkingTravelers.

Fed Up January 5, 2009 at 6:06 pm

I saw a post asking which airline will fail in 2009. I hope they all do. I’m fed up with overbooked flights, cattle car seating, nickle and diming on every expense, bogus frequent flyer programs, incompatibility between “partners”, lack of interest and support by the agents, and delayed or cancelled flights (feel free to add your own complaints here).

My Continental flight today was delayed for 3 hours, and when I arrived at connecting Delta gate, the door was still open, plane was at the gate. I approached the agent, who ignored me, and proceeded to shut the gangway door, and ignore me again one he returned to counter. After indicating that I had a confirmed seat on the flight, he commented that “he didn’t have anymore ‘tolerance’ for this flight”. What the hell does that mean?

Little did he know that my brother was laying in the hospital dying and I was trying to get to him before he did. Because of this missed flight, and the “lack of ‘tolerance’” of this Delta agent, I probably will not. I couldn’t even find a “red coat” to complain. It’s time for alternatives.

Is there not one airline out there that is willing to step up and become a leader in the industry? If there were, I for one, would pledge my unending support and patronage above all others. The airline industry should consider the overall lack of sympathy the general public recently had for the big three automakers when they made all the wrong choices and ended up with there hats in their hands looking for handouts from Uncle Sam. I will have no sympathy for any existing airline that is facing the same fate. All I can say is “good riddance”.

Let’s all vote with our pocketbooks. We now have the incentive to reduce our travel due to the economy, lets take it further and support only those airlines who will treat us like human beings and not cattle. Let’s put the others out of business.

Maybe it is time to start researching how to build Transporters. After all, scrambling your molecules and reassembling them thousands of miles away can’t be much riskier than flying on today’s airlines. And it would be a hell of a lot faster. They might even figure out how to unscramble some eggs and put them in your stomach while in transit. Wow, a meal in transit. What a concept!
