For summer travelers, Kiawah’s still a hidden gem

by Jason Barger on May 19, 2009

Looking for an escape this summer to beautiful beaches, outdoor activities, tremendous golf, yet a non-commercialized oasis?

In a day and age when those criteria seem hard to find together, Kiawah Island in South Carolina offers a renewing pace. Although it has been growing in popularity over the last 15 years, this unique blend of relaxation and natural activity is still a hidden gem.

Located only 40 minutes outside the charming city of Charleston, South Carolina, Kiawah has the feeling of a remote destination. Free of the typical commercialized restaurant and retail tourism, Kiawah Island is a retreat to simple living.

Stock your fridge with local seafood, walk the beaches, stroll to the pools, bike the seemingly endless paths, or kayak with the dolphins through the inlet coves. If you’re a golfer, you won’t be disappointed by the high quality courses blended into the beautiful marsh settings. If you have young kids, an afternoon of “crabbing” with the most basic supplies from the general store is a thrill for all.

For anyone along the east coast or midwest, Kiawah Island is a highly attractive spot located only a short one day drive away. If airline fares to other beach resorts are seeming a bit out of reach this summer, consider escaping to Kiawah.

I can sense the slowing pace of your life already.

I went to Kiawah for my honeymoon seven years ago (booking directly through the resort) and was very disappointed. For the price, I felt I did not get what I paid for… I had endless problems with reservations, the condition of the unit, and general customer service issues.

Certainly the beaches were beautiful (although a chair and umbrella were not included in the several-hundred per night room rate) and if I golfed, I guess the courses looked nice. I wouldn’t know too much about half the island, as you can’t get access to it without golf or restaurant reservations, or a residential pass.

I would much prefer booking a non-commercial beach (such as Kure beach in NC) over another trip to Kiawah.

Want an even better place? 2 mile long beach? warm water. 5 golf courses from $30 for 18 with a cart to beachfront for $90 for a round? Great restaurants? True southern heritage with class and distinction? Inexpensive lodging, gorgeous surroundings? Undiscovered coastal gem? Warm year round – not in Florida. Easy road access?

    I’m not telling you. Sorry.

Kiawah is not for the faint of wallet. . . . takes some serious coin to go there.
