Eweek and other sites are reporting that the iPhone 3G issue may be hardware related. A simple firmware update may not fix the issue customers are experiencing

http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/Infineon-Chip-Causing-iPhone-Problems/

We'll all have to see what Apple does to fix this. They have to hurry as the run-up to the Christmas season is close. If it needs a new chipset, the ones they are building now will be useless and they will have no inventory for the holiday rush.

While I wouldn't recommend running out and picking up the iPhone just yet for the business traveler, the phone is still fine for the average user. I have to admit, my daughter got a new iPhone for her birthday a few weeks ago and it has worked almost flawlessly.

While she has seen the issue of not connecting on the 3G network, it doesn't affect her ability to use the phone (She is 13 and uses it for IM and email....oh, as a phone too).
