A state senator in California is proposing a bill to stiffen law enforcement on cruise ships sailing the state’s waterways. State Sen. Joe Simitian is proposing a California Ocean Ranger program, which will place an ocean ranger on ships. According to USA Today’s Cruise Log, Simitian’s bill says the cruise industry “has failed to adopt adequate measures to protect passengers from theft, rape, assaults, and suspected homicides.†Victims of cruise ship crime are expected to testify in support of the bill, according to the report.
