Living in New York I have a choice of three airports to travel from. I regularly travel to Toronto, Canada, and have a choice of two airports there. So in addition to looking out for baggage charges if I want to check a bag, I have to factor in the cost to travel to each airport and back. For me, using a popular car service, round trips to LGA are $84, JFK $118.50 and EWR $140.50 (this is base fare plus tolls and tips). In addition if I fly into YYZ, the round trip to the city is CAD115 in a car service, if I fly to YTZ, the airline's complimentary shuttle to Union Station gets me within walking distance of the office and hotel. The upshot is that a EWR-YYZ-EWR flight has to be at least $56.50 cheaper than a LGA-YYZ-LGA flight to make it worthwhile, and that does not factor in travel time to the airport. A EWR-YTZ-EWR flight has almost over LGA-YYZ-LGA because of the saving in the travel from YYZ to the city center.
