Thank you for your article. I just got home from my vacation and started to look through all my credit card receipts. I was wondering what those extra fees and charges were on my final car rental receipt from Budget. Then I looked at my Hotwire confirmation and saw that Hotwire also charged me some tax recovery charges and fees. After searching on the web and reading your article, I called Hotwire. The lady tried to contact Budget right away, but there was no one at the counter. She told me to fax my final receipt to Hotwire and that they will contact Budget about double charging me these recovery fees. The lady told me it will take up to 7-10 business days to resolve this. You are right - I really need to take a close look next time so that I won't be charged twice for these fees!

Thanks again for writing the article!

Personally I'm happy to pay a little more to deal with someone who isn't looking for every possible angle to rip me off - that is, if you can find someone in a given line business. I've pretty much stopped renting cars because of all the aggravation they put customers through.

Chris -I learn SO MUCH from reading your column, emails, website, etc. Thanks for letting us know all the travel-related scams and dirty dealings we need to look out for. Like many others, I'm always trying to get the best deal (since I have a limited budget for travel) and would be in a pickle if I found I had to pay for questionable charges. Thanks for going to bat for all of us !
