Taxes and fees imposed on travel and travelers have gotten totally out of hand. State and local legislators view these taxes as a gold mine because they are imposed on visitors and not - for the most part - on locals.

The problem is that every entity has their hand out for a piece of the traveler's dollar. Travelers should be outraged over this and similar taxes. Hotel taxes? Easily 20 percent in some areas. Air taxes and fees? Do you wonder what happened to those off-season cheap airfares to Europe? Check out the taxes and fees - you've doubled your cost.

WI has had some weird pholosophies. Not related to the above, but when we used to take road trips across the US, we couldn't get real dairy half and half for our coffee or real butter for our bread in WI. This from the "Dairy State."

Technically, this is an 800% tax increase (from $2 to $18). I'm not sure where the Enterprise employee got the 73.6%, but he says that's what the tax RATE would be on a $30 rental. That's $22.08, so it sounds like there's another $6.08 in other taxes on that $30 rental already.

Rental car taxes and fees have become ridiculous the last several years. I remember when I used to be able to get rental cars for $10/day after taxes and fees. Now, even if I redeem a "free" rental day, the taxes and fees are more than that. I've seen numerous times where the taxes and fees were almost as much as the rental charge.

Governments seem to think that consumers are an endless supply of money.

To all - I am very happy that this topic is being discussed. We returned three weeks ago from Minnesota. We paid a total tax bill on our rental of approximately 40%. We paid $932 for a month car rental plus $400 + in tax.

When we were in Florida, our car rental tax was 30%.

So we have informed our son that we will not rent a car when we visit in Minneapolis. He can pick us up at the hotel or we will take a taxi to and from their home. No more trips to Minnesota and Wisconsin for us.

Our solution for Florida is that we will take the AMTRAK Aoto train to Florida and forget the rental fee tax. It will cost us some driving time but we will save several hundred dollars.

Have a wonderful day - Cliff
