Christmas may be over, but winter weather travel disasters are probably just beginning. So far this season, London Heathrow has been basically shut for a few days, and the New York area airports are just thinking about reopening after more than a 24-hour closure. Sometimes there is simply just too much snow.

The real reason airlines can cancel flights prior to snowstorms is because of new technology and new communications tools that allows them to reach their customers like the never could in the days of yore, two years ago.

Yes, security lines can be a problem, and one lousy TSA agent can ruin your whole day. But, as far as actually impacting travel plans and ruining trips, TSA has nothing on the weather.

My wife makes fun of me because the morning of any flight I’m going to take I check at least three forecasts. First, know what your weather forecast about the time you are scheduled to take off. Second, check your arrival city about the time you are scheduled to land. Finally, check the weather at any connecting airports.

Now that we’re out of winter storm season, barely (and yes, there was snow in Denver in May), it’s summer thunderstorm season. Translation: weather delays. When storms cause a delay, your cell phone may be your best friend.

Many airlines have had online booking bonuses, internet only fares, or mileage fares. And of some of those special fares are more restrictive than standard fares. Ditto, consolidator fares can have higher fees for changes. Now, Delta Airlines is up to something new. An extra fee for clients who change any ticket originally booked by a travel agent.
