Aiming to be a greener airline, United Parcel Service, Inc. says that it will try “to cut its airline fleet’s greenhouse gas emissions 42 percent from 1990 levels during the next decade by using less fossil fuel in its jets.”

The passenger airline sector may not be the only ones feeling the pinch. ABX Air, which handles packages for DHL Express in the United States may have to lay off as many as 7,000 employees because DHL, based in Germany, is pulling out of the domestic market.

Passengers aren’t the only ones getting hit with fuel surcharges by the airlines. Air cargo carriers, who also must deal with an increase in jet fuel prices, are passing the cost to those who ship with them. As a result, cargo volume across the United States (and other parts of the world) are seeing a decrease in volume as companies are looking harder at how they ship their goods.
