Clients often ask, “Should I buy travel insurance?” The answer varies because there are so many variables involved. It’s not just how much you stand to lose on the trip itself, but how much any delays, injuries or illness, while on route, could cost. Then, there is the unexpected — things like volcanoes.

Tennessee resident Patty Johnson was looking forward to her 5-day cruise on the Carnival Fantasy sailing from Mobile, Alabama last December. However, when she arrived at the pier there was no ship due to severe fog. According to Johnson the weather wasn’t the only thing that was foggy, but so too was the information they received from Carnival.

Does your insurance cover military if they have to deploy? Surprisingly, the answer from Carnival was, “It is NOT covered.” And this was confirmed by talking to two people at Carnival and two at the insurance agency. One person I spoke to said that it would be covered if and only if he was deployed for a natural disaster, so presumably something like Tuesday’s earthquake in Haiti might qualify. But not for a war or act of war.
