At a time that airline fees seem only limited by airline executives’ imaginations, it’s hard to believe that it was less than 10 years that one of the nicest perks for being a United elite-level frequent flier was no same-day change fees, if space was available.

As much as travelers may not like them, airline fees are here to stay. And to be fair, there is a certain logic in “unbundling” the components of a trip. Travelers who bring their own food can save money, travelers who aren’t fussy about their seat assignments don’t have to pay for premium seats, and travelers traveling light aren’t subsidizing passengers who check several bags.

Despite the recession and tough times for airlines in general, many of my clients complain that the planes seem a lot fuller. And as U.S. airlines begin to release results for July, load factors really stands out … it’s not their imagination. There may be fewer flights, but they are packed to the gills.
