Ski resorts out west, in the Rockies and in the Pacific Northwest are facing a difficult avalanche danger period. There is almost no danger within the resort boundaries, however skiers and riders who duck under the ropes are courting danger.

In these days of shrinking airline capacity, it is nice to have news of a new route opening. Naturally, it has to do with reaching a ski and snowboard area once only accessible by a 3 to 5 hour drive. Now a short hop from LA brings winter sports enthusiasts to one of America’s biggest resorts.

Charlie LeochaDistant destination ski and snowboard resorts will be facing strong headwinds of rising airfares, diminishing flight schedules and new fees for transporting skis and snowboards. In the past, the main problems faced by marketers were financial and emotional — costs vs. great snow. Today changes in airlift capacity might mean no airline seats to reach destination resort slopes.

Sunshine Village in the Canadian Rockies in the Banff National Park reported almost two feet of snow this weekend. Good news for Spring skiing.

skier.gifSkiers and snowboarders here in the U.S.A. are enjoying an epic year of snow. Right now, the U.S. has the best skiing and riding conditions in the world. Better yet, most of the resorts with the longest seasons in North America are within only an hour of two great spring skiing airports—Salt Lake City, Utah, and Reno, Nevada.

On Lake Tahoe’s north rim, two Nevada resorts, Mt. Rose and Diamond Peak, will be holding their annual “Dummy Downhill” races on April 5th. Both resorts are less than an hour from Reno, Nevada, and have great conditions right now.
