Here is the American Society of Travel Agents’ (ASTA) satement regarding the Sabre, Inc. actions in de-preferencing American Airlines (AA) listings on their systems and the removal of AA flights from Expedia and Orbitz.

After American Airlines (AA) made an unprovoked attack on Orbitz by removing their ticketing permissions from their system and after Expedia failed to reach a new contract with AA, Sabre, Inc., one of the largest GDSs that form the backbone of IT for thousands of travel agents and the owner of Travelocity, has “de-preferenced” American Airline flights.

The Menendez Clear Airfares Act has been submitted to Congress. It is the latest attempt to bring some sanity to airfare pricing and how those airfares are presented to consumers. It is a good start and I’m sure will be improved in committee.

While many so-called airline enhancements and perks are overrated, United’s Economy Plus really is a significant improvement. And a strong motivation to fly the airline enough to reach Premier status, which allows free access to the section.

In a memo to travel agents this week, United Airlines announced something that will make it “even more convenient for customers” to sit in their Economy Plus section with extra legroom. Translation: it will make it more convenient to pay more money.
