Across the country and around the world, travelers are being taken aback by high car rental rates.

A Eurailpass was once the cheapest mode of transportation short of lacing up your hiking boots or sticking out your thumb. Car rentals were rare and very expensive. However, these days, Eurailpasses cost far more and have restrictions galore. Today, for many travelers (especially those traveling in a group), the best bargain is a rental car.

The extra-driver fee is, in my opinion, nothing more than a money grab. It doesn’t make any sense, either. By Enterprise’s logic, a married couple or a same-sex couple is less of a risk to a rental car than an opposite-sex couple, or just two friends. I haven’t seen any evidence that married couples are any less likely to total a car than unmarried couples.

Ah, the old Mexican insurance scam! Regular readers of this column already know about this one. It goes something like this: You rent a car south of the border, believing the rate you’ve been quoted includes all mandatory charges. But wait. When you get to the car rental counter, an associate tells you that without insurance, you’re not going anywhere. So you pay.
