My fiance and I are going to Melbourne, Australia, to celebrate his six-month, “all clear” from cancer. I booked a four-star hotel on Priceline.com for our first two nights and when they revealed the hotel, it was actually a three-star on the hotel’s own Web site.
Okay, sometimes it’s simply all about a cheap, clean, comfortable bed and a good night’s sleep. But often it isn’t. And in a world of never-ending deals, in the mail, on the internet and elsewhere, it’s important to know the difference.
Priceline this morning launched a new application called Price Maps, a hotel mapping service that lets you scroll over city maps that automatically locate and display hotels and prices. If you’re looking for a bargain on your next hotel, this might be an interesting new resource.
Priceline has just released their list of the Top 50 Destinations for Labor Day 2009. This is compilation based on actual bookings through priceline.com. That makes this list different from surveys that focus on future plans. This survey is based on future bookings of tens of thousands of travelers.
I’m a sucker for anything having to do with Priceline’s Negotiator, William Shatner’s alter ego. There’s just something about Captain Kirk bargaining with airlines that’s a utterly surreal. Well, it turns out some of you feel the same way.

Priceline’s 6th annual survey of the 50 most popular destinations for July 4, 2009 is out today. The survey is based on more than 30,000 hotel room booking requests made by customers using priceline.com’s Name Your Own Price® hotel reservation service.
I have written posts in the past about the advantages of using travel agents. But in truth, there probably are some situations where booking on your own is the best option. And there are some travelers who may be happier without an agent.
For the first time in my experience, bidding for a rental car on Priceline.com did not return the best price. The price offered on Orbitz.com turned out to be better by about 20 percent. Lesson learned: Don’t depend on one site to always provide the best price.
There was always something magical about Yellowstone. It could have to do with observing animals without glass or fencing in between. Maybe the thrill of the not-quite-predictable geyser shows. Recently, my wife and I returned again, this time with cameras, instead of children, in hand.
