Ban peanuts? Really? That’s the first reaction I get when I mention the final, and perhaps the most ridiculed, of the Transportation Department’s proposed new rules. Seriously — why would the government do away with peanuts on a plane?

The government announced today that it may ban peanuts on flights. The reasoning? Some folks with severe peanut allergies are ‘afraid to fly’ because of the risk posed by peanuts on board.

Southwest has made the decision to install what is, for now, a rather high-tech frill — on-board Wi-Fi. According to swabiz.com, the airlines business travel website, the system is being installed on some flights this year and by 2012, all of Southwest’s 540 aircraft will offer high-speed internet.

Is it too soon to say frivolous lawsuits against airlines have become a full-blown trend? The latest court action involves Tehmina Haque, a New York ophthalmologist who is suing American Airlines because it served peanut snacks on a flight.
