Open Skies

Most airline reservations don’t need to be changed in the middle of the night and on the weekends, but sometimes stuff happens. Whether a traveler has booked online, with a online agency or a “brick and mortar” travel agent, it may seem like the simplest thing to call the airline. But, there are a lot of “buts.”

Vietnam Airlines is joining the SkyTeam affiliation. SkyTeam includes: Air France-KLM, Delta Air Line, Korean Air and more smaller carriers. Today, I worry that being a member of an alliance will bring down the level of service that I have come to expect from Vietnam Airlines.

“I think we are seeing an evolution, seeing these alliances become tighter-knit partnerships,” noted AMR, parent company of American Airlines, chief financial officer Tom Horton at a recent travel conference.

Those are words that should terrify passengers, suppliers, airports and travel agents. His words, current action within the antitrust-immunized alliances and the crumbling of the Open Skies treaties are cause for serious concern.

On a day when all of the airports are closed in the Washington, DC area, OpenSkies announced it’s inaugurating service between Dulles Airport and Orly Airport in Paris. It’s safe to assume that before May 3rd, the snow-covered runways in our Nation’s Capital will have been cleared.
