Though I have been to New Mexico many times, visiting the southern part of the state, walking in the steps of Billy the Kid, seeing where Smokey Bear was rescued, gazing at art on Canyon Road in Santa Fe and skiing at Taos, I have never stopped in Albuquerque. It was always just an airport for the rest of New Mexico. On this trip, I made it a point to stop and spend some time in Albuquerque. I’m glad I did.

Set high in the rugged southern Rocky Mountains, Taos, New Mexico, is one of the few resorts left in North America that offers a Ski and Snowboard Better Week every week of the winter season. Taos Ski Valley thrives on their legendary snowsports week culture. At some times most of the skiers and boarders on the daunting mountain are part of the ski week program.

Last week, Judge, M. Christina Armijo ruled that neither the Airline Deregulation Act nor the Federal Aviation Act can preempt state liquor control laws. Under the ruling, New Mexico ordered US Airways to stop serving alcoholic beverages on flights in or over New Mexico. Ned examines the public policy nightmare this ruling could initiate, and what should be done.

A federal judge has denied a liquor permit for US Airways to serve alcohol while overflying New Mexico or while grounded at one of the state’s airports. US Airways sued back in 2007 after the state’s Regulation and License Department initially denied its original application after a horrific crash involving one of its passengers after their plan landed in New Mexico.

New Mexico, about two years ago, came up with an ad campaign featuring aliens claiming that their state was one of the top vacation spots in the galaxy. I never gave much thought to it and figured the state was building on its Roswell fame and our fascination with aliens. Others in the state thought the campaign gave the wrong idea about the state.

Within the ski and snowboard world the opening of Taos to snowboarders is monumental. To celebrate and with a sense of history, Taos is running a lottery for the first 40 places on the chairlift to raise money for charity.
