News reports today are filled with stories of Hurricane Irene bearing down on the East Coast. Friends of mine from DC to Maine are bracing for the storm. After last year’s meager storm performance, the news media has been pumping up this particular hurricane and its pending disasters.

The folk in my home state of New Hampshire will be grumbling. It seems that peak leaf peeping adventures are no longer considered to be in New Hampshire and Vermont or even in New England. Yes, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont are part of the top 10, but North Carolina tops this year’s TripAdvisor list after a survey of 2,300 travelers.

Plus, with fewer seats carrying skiers and snowboarders to the West and the dropping price of gas, it looks like a banner year for New England’s resorts that have their own special mountain magic and provide a far different experience from the resorts out west.

The Department and Homeland Security (DHS) and these states are playing a game of bureaucratic chicken. DHS laid down the law. Most states have complied or applied for legal waivers. These four have not. Come May 11, there may be a big problem.
