You can’t find many places further from somewhere else than Elko, Nevada. This city of about 20,000 sits halfway between Salt Lake City and Reno; 230 miles from the former and 288 miles along one of the loneliest highways in America from the latter. It is also home to the controversial National Cowboy Poetry Gathering that takes place this year from January 30 to February 4, 2012.

Skiers and snowboarders here in the U.S.A. are enjoying an epic year of snow. Right now, the U.S. has the best skiing and riding conditions in the world. Better yet, most of the resorts with the longest seasons in North America are within only an hour of two great spring skiing airports—Salt Lake City, Utah, and Reno, Nevada.

On Lake Tahoe’s north rim, two Nevada resorts, Mt. Rose and Diamond Peak, will be holding their annual “Dummy Downhill” races on April 5th. Both resorts are less than an hour from Reno, Nevada, and have great conditions right now.
