mileage upgrades

Of all the frequent flier awards, for many travelers upgrades are the most prized, especially for international travel. With good reason — ten hours or more in coach is generally something to be endured. The same time in business class can be a mini-vacation.

United Airlines is the latest to change their award rules this month. While the changes are not drastic, in general most awards “cost” a little more, especially upgrades.

This year, however, the best option for many travelers looking for an upgrade may be to actually buy a business class ticket. It may also be the most cost effective option, if done quickly.

One advantage to the new system is that almost all airfares are upgradeable and travelers don’t have to play the buy-an-upgradeable-ticket game and then be stuck back in coach anyway.

While airlines like to promote free tickets with their mileage programs, the award that many even semi-regular clients want is an upgrade. These are the very awards that are getting harder to get.

You’re not a really frequent flier. Or, maybe you’re a lower level elite — i.e.: basic Delta Medallion, United Mileage Plus Premier, Advantage Gold. But, you’ve been stockpiling your miles. The miles have come from a credit card, maybe from travel, and you’ve finally gotten enough miles to upgrade two tickets to Paris, and you’re booking more than nine months in advance.
