It’s already into December and you suddenly realize you really don’t want to sit at home that week after Christmas. A quick look online or a call to your travel agent will tell you, a few days in Hawaii or the Caribbean or Mexico really isn’t much of an option, unless you’re prepared to spend thousands in airfare before even beginning to look at prices for the few hotels available.

Christopher Ambler and his family were excited to escape the cool Seattle climate and catch some much needed sun on their Royal Caribbean cruise to Mexico. Imagine his horror to learn the family’s entire Mexican cruise was no longer going to Mexico and that it would be cruising to the Pacific Northwest with a stop in, you guessed it, Seattle.

I’ve hesitated to write about the swine flu issue, because it is almost certain that whatever I write may be out of date by the time it is read. But for that and other reasons, maybe it’s time to stop and take a deep breath before we all change our travel plans.

Barring yet another delay, on June 1, 2009, U.S. Citizens over the age of 18 will need either a passport, or new passport card, to re-enter the U.S. even if they are only driving or walking across the border. But is the passport card an option you should consider?
