Maine is the last state to be granted a waiver for the implementation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Real ID program. Maine’s drivers licenses currently require no proof of residency or a check on immigration status.

Hew Hampshire and Montana faced down the Department of Homeland Security and received assurances that their drivers licenses will be accepted at airports after the May deadline for Real ID.

The Department and Homeland Security (DHS) and these states are playing a game of bureaucratic chicken. DHS laid down the law. Most states have complied or applied for legal waivers. These four have not. Come May 11, there may be a big problem.
