Baggage bins above airline seats are getting more and more crowded. As baggage fees go up, passengers are carrying more on board aircraft. But more and more travelers are starting to gate-check luggage as well. It seems to be a loophole in the airline baggage check fee system.

In these days of fees, charges and costs for everything that has to do with airline travel, Travelocity’ just sent me some interesting ways to save on baggage fees, overweight charges, change fees and food costs.

Led by US (I’ve never seen a fee I don’t like) Airways who hiked luggage fees late last year, baggage fees are taking off again as Delta and Continental join in the money grab. Even with Southwest showing that no baggage fees is good business, the legacy airlines are marching into the world of increased fees and less passengers. It won’t take legacy airline passengers too long to catch on to this disguised fare hike.

As a United elite status flier, I long ago decided to do what many frequent fliers do: Make your peace with putting up with one airline on a regular basis, in order to get miles and occasional perks. And one of the biggest perks these days is not paying basic checked luggage fees.

This may come under the “careful what you wish for” category. We have all grumbled under our breath (well sometimes, no-so-under-our-breath) about passengers carrying oversized luggage aboard plane as carry-on luggage. Rep. Lipinski (D-Ill.) is proposing a law mandating the maximum size of bags a passenger can carry on board.

Rather than packing, checking and paying for suitcases when you’re flying, not to mention standing in line at security, would you consider renting your travel wardrobe? It’s an interesting concept. But will it work?

Most travelers have reluctantly adjusted to paying baggage fees every time they travel in the U.S. But international allowances for the most part have remained standard with even economy class passengers allowed two free bags. British Airways is about to change that.

For coach class travel on or after May 5, 2008, Northwest Airlines is matching several other U.S. network carriers and implementing a $25 charge for the customer’s second checked bag. The fee is applied each way.
