Tucked into the end of a blog post about an increase in rental car rates at Boston was a more disturbing note for legacy carriers. While the airport saw a increase of six percent the legacy carriers only 14 percent flew on legacy carriers.

The airline and airport news seems to be moving in the right direction for low-cost, point-to-point carriers. The country’s largest legacy carriers are retrenching in their hubs and the largest airports abandoning middle America to low-cost carriers.

Southwest Airlines is planning to start international operations. When? No one knows for sure, but these routes will be coming. With legacy carriers so heavily invested in international routes, the prospect of a battle with Southwest is not welcome.

Midst the weeping and wailing about high jet fuel prices and the litany of excuses from airline executives like, “Airlines can’t make money with $120 a barrel oil,” some airlines are making money. The airlines that focus on their strengths and put customers first are raking in millions.
